In a country with one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in Southeast Asia, President Rodrigo Duterte's spokesperson Harry Roque announced on Monday he tested positive for COVID-19. His announcement came a week after he touted the Duterte government’s “excellent” pandemic response.
Roque said he was tested in preparation for a meeting with Duterte on Monday. All in all, he has been tested 35 times for COVID, a revelation slammed by critics who said it was a waste of taxpayer money.
But despite testing positive for the virus, Roque held a virtual press briefing from his office in Malacañang Palace.
Early in March, Roque drew flak for likening strict coronavirus curbs to a year-long vacation for Filipinos. The former human rights lawyer has traveled across the country to attend events and to hold remote press conferences.
Roque became one of more than 600,000 Filipinos who tested positive for the coronavirus since the World Health Organization declared a pandemic in March 2020. The Southeast Asian country has recorded almost 13,000 deaths from the virus over the past year.
